Niua Islands – the northernmost group of the Kingdom of Tonga

Niua is the northernmost division of the Kingdom of Tonga, made up of three islands — Niuafoʻou, Niuatoputapu and Tafahi — which together cover only 71.69 square kilometres and are home to some 1,150 people. Great distances separate them from the rest of the kingdom, so boats, radio and the occasional flight have long been lifelines; Niuafoʻou even became known abroad for the mail once floated ashore in sealed tins. The largest village is Hihifo on Niuatoputapu, and the highest point is Piuʻo Tafahi, rising 560 metres above the sea. Share your memories, photographs and family stories with the community.
