Gjirokastër County – the southern county of the stone-built city of Gjirokastër

Gjirokastër County is one of Albania's twelve counties and takes its name from the city of Gjirokastër, whose hillside houses of stone are known far beyond the country. Covering 2,884 square kilometres with a population of 60,013 in 2023, it is among the most thinly settled counties: a land of mountains, river valleys and villages in southern Albania. Distance and terrain shaped life here, through farming and livestock, stone building, and for many families long periods of work away from home. Today the county is valued above all for its landscapes and its old town architecture. Tell us about your village, your family and the memories you keep of this region.
