Dornod – Mongolia's easternmost province, renamed from Choibalsan in 1963
Dornod, whose name simply means "East", was created in the administrative reorganisation of 1941. It was first called Choibalsan, after Khorloogiin Choibalsan, and the aimag carried that name until 1963, when it was given its present name. The provincial capital went through a change of name in the same period: the town previously known as Bayan Tümen also became Choibalsan, and it remains the administrative centre today. As the easternmost of Mongolia's 21 aimags, Dornod is a province of wide steppe horizons, where herding and the open grassland still shape the working year.
