Sükhbaatar – the eastern aimag named after Damdin Sükhbaatar
Sükhbaatar Province carries the name of Damdin Sükhbaatar, and its Mongolian name is often translated as "Axe Hero". That name is the clearest marker of the province's place in the country's modern story. One of Mongolia's 21 aimags, it lies in the east of the country, with Baruun-Urt as its capital and the meeting point for trade, schooling and services across a wide area. Life here is shaped by open steppe country, long horizons and a herding tradition that still sets the rhythm of the year. Whether you grew up in Baruun-Urt or in one of the sums, we would be glad to read your memories, family stories and old photographs.
