Orkhon – the province created around Erdenet in 1994
Orkhon is one of Mongolia's youngest provinces: it was carved out of Bulgan Province in 1994 and formed a new entity together with its capital, Erdenet, which until then had been administered as a federal municipality. That reorganisation gave the area around Erdenet its own provincial identity and administration. The province takes its name from the Orkhon River, one of the best-known rivers in the country. Today Orkhon is centred on Erdenet, where most of its working life, schooling and services are concentrated, and where people from many parts of the country have made their homes. If you grew up here, worked here or came to study, we invite you to share memories, photographs and neighbourhood stories.
