Machinga – a district of Malawi's Southern Region

Machinga is one of the districts of Malawi's Southern Region, with its administrative centre at Machinga. Covering 3,771 square kilometres and home to some 369,614 people, it is a district where most families live in villages and small trading centres rather than in large towns. The boma is the meeting point for district offices, markets and schools serving the surrounding countryside. Farming and the seasonal rhythm of planting and harvest shape the year, while churches, mosques, markets and village gatherings carry community life. Every village here has its own account of how it came to be, of chiefs, schools and hard seasons. Share your memories, photographs and family stories with the community.
