Chikwawa – a broad Southern Region district in Malawi

Chikwawa is a district in the Southern Region of Malawi, with its administrative centre in the town of Chikwawa. It covers 4,755 square kilometres and has a population of about 356,682, spread across a wide area of villages, trading centres and farmland. The boma brings together district offices, markets and schools, and serves as the point of reference for communities across the district. Agriculture and the turn of the rainy and dry seasons set the pace of daily life, while markets and family networks tie the villages together. Every corner of Chikwawa has its own story — of founding families, of good harvests and difficult years. We invite members to share memories, old photographs and local history here.
