Thyolo – one of Malawi's 28 districts, shaped by its tea-growing hills

Thyolo is one of the 28 districts of Malawi, with its administrative centre in the town of Thyolo. Covering 1,715 square kilometres, it is among the smaller districts in area, yet home to some 458,976 people, which makes it one of the more closely settled parts of the country. Its hills and estates have long made tea a defining feature of the landscape and of working life here. Alongside the estates, smallholder farms, markets and schools shape everyday routines across the district. Families hold long memories of their villages, churches and working seasons. If you grew up in Thyolo or still live here, share your photographs, memories and stories with the community.
