Balaka – a Southern Region district grown around its trading town
Balaka is a district in the Southern Region of Malawi, and its administrative centre is the town of Balaka. The town is the district's meeting point, holding the district offices, markets, schools and transport links that connect surrounding villages to the wider region. Beyond the town, life is rural, and the rhythm of planting, tending and harvest still organises the year for most families. Churches, mosques, village gatherings and local markets carry much of the social life of the district, and local traditions have their place in it too. The story of Balaka is kept above all in family memory. We invite members to share photographs, recollections and the stories they grew up hearing.
