Kunene – the region named after the river on Namibia's northern border
Kunene takes its name from the Kunene River, which forms the region's northern boundary with Angola. The river is the single feature that has shaped the region's name, its landscape and the movement of people and herds along it. One of Namibia's fourteen regions, Kunene has its administrative centre at Opuwo, the town where regional offices, schools, health services and markets serve communities spread over great distances. This is a region of dry country, wide horizons and a strong livestock-keeping tradition, where family and cattle have long belonged together. Today Opuwo is also a stopping point for many travellers crossing the north-west. If you grew up here, tell us your stories, memories and family photographs.
