Baitsi – the northern district once known as Baiti and Beidi

Baitsi lies on the northern side of Nauru, a small island nation in the central Pacific. Its name has travelled through time: older records call the district Baiti, and earlier still Beidi, a reminder of how spellings and languages have met on the island. Together with neighbouring districts it belongs to the Ubenide constituency. Everyday life follows the coast, where households and community buildings cluster on the narrow shore while the raised interior rises behind them, and the reef remains a source of food and of stories. Do you remember the older names, or keep photographs of Baitsi from earlier years? Share them with the community.
