Aiwo – the Nauruan district once recorded as Yangor
Aiwo is a district of Nauru in the central Pacific, and its name has more than one form: it appears occasionally as Aiue, and in earlier times it was recorded as Yangor. Those changing names trace the district's long contact with seafarers, missionaries and administrators who each wrote down what they heard. Aiwo gives its name to the surrounding constituency, and like the rest of the island it is a coastal community with the raised interior at its back. Daily life turns on the sea, family plots and community gatherings. Which name did your family use, and what stories go with it? Tell us here.
