Grand'Anse Mahé – the 'great cove' district on the island of Mahé

Grand'Anse Mahé is an administrative district of Seychelles on Mahé, the largest and most populous of the granite islands. Its French name, meaning roughly 'great cove', points to the wide bay that gave the settlement its shape: the sea in front, steep green hills behind, and the road linking households strung along the coast. Fishing, small holdings and, later, plantation crops such as coconut and cinnamon gave the district its working rhythm, while Creole speech, cooking and music have carried its culture through the generations. Today it is a district where island life stays close to the shore. What do you remember of Grand'Anse? Share it here.
