Plaisance – a district of Mahé with a name promising pleasant living

Plaisance is an administrative district of Seychelles on the island of Mahé, and its French name, suggesting pleasantness and ease, belongs to the same layer of island place names left by the early French period. Like its neighbours, the district takes its shape from the land itself: the narrow inhabited coastal belt, the hills rising behind it, and the sea that has always supplied food and work. Households, churches and schools form the fabric of neighbourhood life, and Creole is the language of the street and the kitchen. Today Plaisance is a settled residential part of Mahé.
