Bel Air – the district of Mahé whose name means 'fine air'
Bel Air is an administrative district of Seychelles on the island of Mahé, and its French name, meaning something like 'fine air', recalls the higher, breezier ground above the coast where such names were given. It belongs to the cluster of districts that grew up on the main island, where the built-up coastal strip meets the wooded slopes of the interior. Generations have lived here from fishing, trades, gardens and work in town, with Creole language, cooking and music carrying the culture forward. Today Bel Air is a close-knit residential district.
