It marks the place where the flag of the Royal Niger Company was lowered and the Union Jack was hoisted in January 1900, following the transfer of the company's territories to the British governmentgovernment.
The site is significant in the history of British administration in Nigeria and Lokoja's role as an early colonial administrative centre. A monument at the site commemorates the historic flag ceremony.
Visitors interested in Lokoja's colonial history can combine a visit to The Spot with other historic attractions in the city, including the Iron of Liberty, Mount Patti and other colonial-era sites.

The First Prison Yard in Northern Nigeria is a colonial-era prison relic in Lokoja. The prison yard is associated with the early development of the British colonial penal system in Northern Nigeria. It is traditionally reported to have been built around 1902 during the administration of Lord Lugard and was used to detain prisoners serving longer sentences. A warders' observatory overlooking the prison was used to monitor prisoners and reduce the possibility of escape.
The remains are located within the premises of the Kogi State Hotels and Tourism facilities in Lokoja. The site is part of the city's collection ofcolonial historical monuments and provides an opportunity to learn about the development of colonial administration and imprisonment in the region.
The relics have suffered from neglect and deterioration, and visitors should check locally for access arrangements before visiting. …
