Saint Paul Parish, Dominica – the village of Massacre and its painful memory
Saint Paul on Dominica's west coast carries a name that recalls one of the darkest chapters of the island's history: the village of Massacre is named after the killing of Dominica's indigenous people by European settlers during the colonial era. Remembering this past helps honour the Kalinago heritage that remains part of Dominica's identity. The parish's largest settlements are Canefield, where the island's second airport is located, and Mahaut, which includes the port of Belfast. Over time the area has grown into an important link for trade and travel close to the capital. Today about 8,400 people live in Saint Paul.
