Islamabad Capital Territory – a capital laid out from 1960

In 1960 land was transferred from the Rawalpindi District to create a new federal capital, and the master plan of that decade set out the territory in distinct parts: the urban city, a rural belt and the Margalla Hills that form its green northern backdrop. Rawalpindi itself was included in the early plan but was eventually excluded in the 1980s. The territory covers 906.5 square kilometres on the northern edge of the Pothohar Plateau and, according to the 2023 census, is home to more than 2.3 million people. Members are invited to share their memories, family stories and photographs of the capital region.
